Tracks, fences and keeping wildlife out

In short

  • First plan it on the map: vehicle track, livestock lane and paths mustn't cross where they shouldn't.
  • A track fails because of water, not weight. Camber and drainage matter more than thickness of stone.
  • Build the fence for the animal: deer jump, pigs dig under, foxes dig, mink and stoats squeeze through, goats climb.
  • Electric fencing is the cheapest protection from wildlife — but only with good earthing and enough voltage.
  • Wildlife is protected by law: no poison, no illegal traps, no killing without the right licence. Ask the wildlife authority before you act.
