In short
- A lab test is the only way to know whether water is safe to drink. Bacteria at least once a year and after every flood or work on the well.
- Boiling kills germs but doesn't remove nitrates or chemicals — it even concentrates them.
- 5 % bleach: 2 drops per litre of clear water, 4 drops for cloudy water, then wait 30 minutes. Check the strength on your bottle.
- A UV lamp only works on clear water, with a prefilter, and doesn't protect the water after the lamp.
- For babies, only tested water low in nitrates, boiled and cooled.
