The homestead workshop: tools, kit, repairs

In short

  • Start with a solid bench, a vice and a tool wall. Add the rest as you need it.
  • Workshop power goes through an RCD (30 mA) — a GFCI in the US and Canada. Have an electrician do the wiring.
  • Fuel, sawdust and welding don't mix. Keep a fire extinguisher by the door.
  • Every bolt and part goes in a labelled box. A repair that takes an hour takes ten minutes when you know where the part is.
  • Write your repairs down: the log tells you what breaks, when and what it costs.
