In short
- Prevention is 90 % of the job: clean water, dry bedding, space, quarantine and wild birds kept away.
- Bird flu and Newcastle disease are notifiable. If you suspect them, call your vet or APHA, DAFM or the state veterinarian at once.
- Stagnant warm water in summer and dead animals in a pond bring botulism.
- Mouldy bedding and feed bring aspergillosis and aflatoxins.
- No antibiotics or medicines on your own initiative. Herbal remedies are support, not cures.
- Wash your hands after working with the birds; children, pregnant women and anyone ill take extra care.
