In short
- Never keep turkeys with chickens or on their ground: it is the only reliable protection against blackhead (histomonosis).
- New birds go into quarantine for at least 30 days, always.
- Look at the flock for 2–3 minutes every morning. A sleepy, fluffed-up turkey with drooping wings is ill.
- Sudden deaths, birds off feed and water, a swollen head, nervous signs: vet at once. Suspected bird flu or Newcastle disease must be reported by law.
- No antibiotics on your own initiative. After any medicine, keep to the withdrawal period for meat and eggs.
- Herbal preparations are support, not a cure for infectious disease.
