In short
- A large 40 kg (90 lb) guardian eats roughly 0.45–0.6 kg of dry food a day, and in winter and on the hill up to 0.8 kg.
- Water always: a dog needs roughly 50–60 mL per kg of body weight a day, ice-free in winter.
- Never raw offal or raw pork: hydatid disease and Aujeszky's disease (fatal for dogs and cats).
- Poisonous: chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion and garlic, xylitol, cooked poultry bones; for cats also lilies, paracetamol and dog flea products.
- A cat needs cat food (taurine, more protein). Porridge with milk is not a meal.
- Kennel: raised off the ground, insulated, with a wind-protected entrance and straw in winter; shade and water next to it.
