In short
- Core dog vaccines: distemper, parvovirus and infectious hepatitis, and on a farm also leptospirosis. Rabies vaccination is compulsory in most US states and Canadian provinces; in the UK and Ireland it's needed for travel.
- A dog near livestock: tapeworm treatment at least every 3 months, and every 4–6 weeks near slaughter, carcasses and in hydatid areas, on the vet's plan (ESCCAP).
- A tick bite followed by fever, lameness or dark urine means a tick-borne disease: vet at once.
- Never use dog products on a cat (permethrin kills cats).
- A large dog with a swollen belly, poisoning, a snakebite and a tom that can't pass urine are emergencies.
- Prescription medicines come from the vet. Never give a dog or cat human medicines.
