Mixing your own feed: rations by species

In short

  • Recipes are per 100 kg of mix (220 lb); for a smaller batch divide everything by the same number.
  • Protein targets: layers 16–18 %, chicks 20–22 %, fattening pigs 16 % then 13 %, goats and sheep 13–16 %, rabbits 15–17 %.
  • A premix for that species is essential for poultry and pigs: without it, vitamins and trace elements are missing.
  • Raw soya and raw beans must never go into a mix; only soya bean meal or toasted soya.
  • Mix for 3–4 weeks, not half a year: vitamins break down and moisture brings mould.
  • Never give sheep a mix or minerals meant for goats, cattle or pigs: copper.
