In short
- Needles are chosen by the yarn: medium yarn (220–280 m per 100 g) needs 3.5–4.5 mm needles (US 4–7).
- Before every project knit a tension swatch 12 × 12 cm and count the stitches over 10 cm (4 in). Without one, a jumper comes out a size too big or too small.
- A sock is knitted 10 % narrower than the foot circumference, so it fits well.
- For weaving, the warp must be stronger than the weft: combed, plied wool or cotton.
- Wool shrinks 20–30 % when felted; knitting for felting must be bigger.
- Woollens are washed by hand, in lukewarm water, without rubbing and dried flat.
