In short
- In high summer a garden needs roughly 20–30 litres per m² a week, rain included (1 mm of rain = 1 L/m²).
- Water seldom and deeply, early in the morning, at the roots and not over the leaves.
- Hoe and weed while the weeds are small: one hoeing saves moisture like one watering.
- A mulch 5–10 cm (2–4 in) deep saves a third of the water and most of the weeding; put it down once the soil has warmed.
- The most damage comes from uneven watering and skipped weeks, not from one dry week.
