In short
- A vine needs the warmest spot on the holding: a south-facing slope or wall, out of the frost pocket.
- Plant grafted vines on a rootstock that suits your soil; the rootstock protects against phylloxera.
- Vineyard: rows 2–2.5 m apart, vines 1–1.2 m apart in the row; pergola: one vine every 2–4 m.
- Trellis: posts every 5–6 m, end posts with anchors, a fruiting wire at 60–80 cm, with 2 pairs of wires above it.
- The graft union 2–3 cm (1 in) above the soil, earthed up with loose soil until the vine starts growing.
- In the first year keep one shoot tied to a cane; don't expect a crop before the third year.
