In short
- Keep homestead money separate from household money: its own account, card, or at least an envelope and a notebook.
- A budget has three parts: costs, income and a reserve. The reserve is 10–15 % of annual costs and is not spent on expansion.
- Plan income cautiously and costs generously. In the first two or three years, treat sales income as a bonus.
- For each enterprise, work out the gross margin: income plus the value of food for the house, minus direct costs.
- The budget is made in December and checked every month. A plan never compared with reality is a wish.
