Pruning and caring for vines through the year

In short

  • Grapes are borne on this year's shoots, which grow from the buds of last year's canes.
  • Prune from late December to February, after the hardest frosts, in dry weather.
  • Keep 10–16 buds per vine in a vineyard; fewer on a weak vine, more on a vigorous one, 30–50 on a pergola.
  • Guyot: every year one fruiting cane of 6–10 buds and one renewal spur of 2 buds.
  • Summer canopy work from May to August: shoot thinning, tucking in, tipping and laterals.
  • An old, neglected vine is renewed gradually, over 2–3 years.
