Feeding without bought-in feed

In short

  • A fattening pig from 25 kg to slaughter eats roughly 300 kg of grain and meal, roughly 1.5–3 kg a day, with 5–10 L of water.
  • Protein in the ration: 16 % up to 60 kg, then 13 % to slaughter. Maize has only roughly 8.5 %.
  • Protein from the homestead: peas, field beans, lucerne, clover, whey. Soya only heat-treated, never raw.
  • A premix (roughly 3 kg per 100 kg of ration) is the one purchase that always pays.
  • Never meat, swill or kitchen scraps. It's illegal in the UK, Ireland and the EU, banned or tightly regulated in the US and Canada, and the main road for African swine fever.
  • Potatoes are cooked and the cooking water thrown away. 4 kg of cooked potatoes replace roughly 1 kg of grain.
