Raspberries and blackberries

In short

  • Summer raspberries fruit on last year's canes; after picking, those canes are cut to the ground.
  • Autumn (primocane) raspberries fruit at the top of this year's canes; in winter the whole row is cut to the ground.
  • Keep a raspberry row narrow, 40–50 cm (16–20 in) at most, with 10–15 canes per metre.
  • Raspberries and blackberries need a support: posts every 5–8 m and 2–3 wires.
  • Raspberries cannot stand wet soil; on heavy soil plant on a ridge 20–30 cm high.
  • Pick every two to three days, in the morning, into shallow containers, and cool the fruit at once.
