In short
- Per adult equivalent (AE) a year: 100 kg of bread grain, 25 kg of maize and 6 kg of pulses (range 5–8). A child of 7–14 = 0.7 AE, up to 6 years = 0.4.
- Animals often eat more grain than people: a hen roughly 30 kg of grain, a fattening pig 250 kg, a dairy goat 80 kg a year.
- On top of the need add seed (if you sow), 10–30 % reserve and storage losses (1–15 %).
- Split the stock across three places: kitchen (a month), larder (2–3 months) and main store (until harvest), with seed kept separately.
- Once a month measure the stock (tape measure in the drum and granary) and compare it with the plan.
