A fruit-processing plan through the season

In short

  • An adult eats roughly 75 kg (165 lb) of fruit a year (60–90 kg), fresh and processed. Count the family in adult equivalents (AE) as in H00-02: a child of 7–14 is 0.7, a child up to 6 is 0.4.
  • For winter, allow 30 weeks without fresh fruit from the orchard, except apples and pears from the store, and add a 10 % margin.
  • The family of four in the example processes roughly 150 kg of fruit; with fresh fruit and the store that is 275–320 kg a year.
  • Orchards crop in alternate years: plan 25 % more trees or bushes than an average crop would need.
  • Spread the work over 10–15 working days from June to November; count up what's left in spring.
