A grain and flour plan for the year

In short

  • An adult eats roughly 100 kg of bread grain (wheat, spelt, rye) and 25 kg of maize a year.
  • Store grain, mill as needed: wholemeal flour for 2–4 weeks, white for 2–3 months at most.
  • The store from harvest to harvest is the need for 12 months + 10–20 % reserve, plus seed if you sow.
  • 1 kg of flour gives roughly 1.45 kg of bread; 1 kg of wholemeal flour needs 1.05 kg of grain, white 1.4 kg.
  • Once a month weigh the store and compare it with the plan: that way you know in time whether it will last to harvest.
