Order of use and stock rotation

In short

  • Two rules together: what keeps shortest goes first, and within the same kind old before new.
  • The weekly basket: bring out of the cellar and store room as much as the family eats in a week, no more.
  • Half the winter stores must be in the house at the start of January; of grain, more than half in January and at least a quarter in April.
  • The freezer is emptied by November, before the pig and the autumn killing.
  • A surplus you won't manage to eat is processed or shared while it is sound, not when it starts to go off.
  • A new jar, bag or sack always goes at the back or underneath, the old one in front.
